ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

At NH Case Ltd we are aware of the necessity to protect the environment in every way possible. In a number of areas, we have formulated strategies which are observed by all staff and communicated to suppliers and customers.

To help ensure fish stocks are sensibly managed, the company will only purchase fish from countries deemed to operate responsible fisheries policies, sensibly enforced.

As an operator of large lorries we do our utmost to minimise frequency, duration and distance of journeys, balanced with the standard of service expected by customers, in order to reduce pollution, congestion and food miles. Similar arrangements are made with our suppliers, and all staff strive for maximum efficiency to avoid extra corrective journeys.

We are necessarily major users of refrigeration plant, and therefore work hard to minimise energy consumption and continue to replace CFC-based gasses through an ongoing programme monitored by the Food & Drinks Federation. We adhere to procedures which ensure that solid and liquid wastes are disposed of in an authorised and appropriate manner. Specialist procedures deal with potentially damaging consumables like waste oil and spent filters. Where practical and consistent with industry regulations, we use recycled materials for packing and we are researching the use of biodegradable packaging for our ready meal production facility.

All sites recycle office consumables wherever possible. All Derv and gas oil, which the company uses in large quantities, are kept in bunded storage with access limited to minimise the potential for accidental release of hazardous materials. Given the nature of the company’s operations, this is the only area where a major disaster is likely to dictate the involvement of the Environment Agency, whose directives would be followed by all staff involved.
